Michigan Nut and Fruit Growers Association was Organized in 1952.

At that time, it was the Michigan Nut Growers Association, and later, we recognized the need to also include Michigan fruit growers. The Michigan Nut & Fruit Growers Association (MNFGA) supports interest in nut and fruit-bearing plants, their products, and their culture.

Members grow a wide variety of nuts and fruits. Nut examples are black and English walnut, chestnut, shagbark and shellbark hickory nuts, hazelnut, butternut, heartnut, northern pecan, and buartnut. Minor fruit examples include pawpaw, persimmon, kiwi, plum, quince, apricot, elderberry, fig, gooseberry, honeyberry, jujube, cornel berries, lingonberry, goji berry, Aronia and service berry. As an aside, several members grow an assortment of mushrooms.

The Association hosts meetings in spring, summer and fall. Friendly interaction, lively discussion and good food make for an enjoyable day. The typical spring meeting is at MSU with guest speakers. The summer and fall meetings are at member orchards, research stations, or at other areas of interest to our members.

There are nut varietal evaluations, volunteer days at agriculture research stations, grafting classes, and other activities to support member interests. The Association newsletter, “MNFGA News,” is published before each meeting and gives meeting information. The MNFGA News articles emphasize practical applications and are of interest to both beginning and experienced fruit and nut growers

Our Nut Evaluation Day

Members bring in their harvest, and our nut experts evaluate them based on size, color, and flavor. If you have a nut-bearing tree or shrub in your yard, would you like to know how it compares? That information, and the bragging rights that go along with it; one of the many benefits of being a member.

Gardening tools are handheld, or in the case of many commercial orchards, include backhoes and other harvesting equipment.
